The Captain Underpants series written by Dav Pilkey are books about a child super hero to that helps kids with bullies and other situations that can happen to them. Captain Underpants has frequently been on the banned books list (Brown, 2017). It has made the list because of potty humor. The author defends the books by saying that what is funny to kids is not funny to adults, so adults want to snuff out the book (Schaub, 2015). One book in particular was banned for having a gay character.
The banning of books is inappropriate because all books were written for a certain audience, so they may not appeal to everybody. Kids humor, especially, may not be funny to adults. The pro of banned books is that it may make adults feel in control about their kids education. However, it harms the children because it eliminates their freedom of choice. Many children struggle to read, and finding a book that appeals to you is part of the battle. When you have less books available, it may make it harder for you to find something you want to read. The responsibility of managing banned books falls on the librarian and the library. Libraries need to keep up with the books that are on the banned list. References Brown, J. (2017).
